Soccer is the most popular sports in Uruguay. Their international team is currently ranked 7 in FIFA world rankings. The team has won the FIFA World Cups twice. They won in 1930 beating Argentina, and also in 1950 against Brazil. They are the smallest country to win FIFA World Cup gold medals. They have also won gold medals at the Summer Olympics twice in 1924 and 1928 (Sports).
Basketball:
The Uruguay basketball team of Uruguay participated in the first Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 and placed 6th. Uruguay has been the winner of twelve South American championships (Basketball).
Rugby
Rugby is another popular sport in Uruguay. Their national team is called Teros. It achieved 15th rank in the 1999 World Cup in Wales. They also participated in the World Cup in Australia in 2003 (Sports).
Tennis
The first time Uruguay made a debut in a major tennis tournament was the Davis Cup in 1931. Marcelo Filippini is the most successful player in Tennis of Uruguay. He won five singles titles and qualified for the quarterfinals at the French Open in 1999 (Sports).
