Carnival
Uruguay’s traditions are a huge part of their culture. During the summer time weeks, there is a carnival. An important event during the carnival is “murgas”. “Murgas” is a group or Uruguayan people who sing self made letter regarding the society, news, government, or any important matter in an ironic and entertaining way (Culture).
Yerba Mate
Yerba mate is another tradition in Uruguay. It is more of a new Uruguayan tradition, but basically it is a drink that you pass around in a circle to socialize. Yerba mate comes from a tree in South America. The leaves are dried and crushed to make a tea-like herb. You usually drink the Mate from a Mate Gourd Mate drinking is a main tradition shared with family and friends. You can drink Mate basically anywhere (Yerba).
Gauchos
Gauchos, or Cowboys are a main cultural tradition towards the inland of Uruguay. Gauchos today still wear the same traditional clothing as Gauchos many generations ago wore. The gaucho is linked to the birth of Uruguay. They represent strong, honest, and proud natives to Uruguay (Relocate).
Arts
The Uruguayan people love the art of theater, and also love many musical and dance traditions. Most of them have Eupopean roots, but with a Uruguayan twist of local color. As far as arts and crafts go, Uruguayan people have a rich tradition of creating beautiful handcrafted leather goods. They make belts, boots, hats and purses out of leather. Homemade wool is used to make a lot of items, especially woolen sweaters. Uruguayan people are also known for their ceramic crafts (About).
